Since 1997 the University of Ferrara's Research Department Centre for the Development of Integrated Automatic Procedures for the Restoration of Monuments (DIAPReM) has been developing operative procedures for the 3D geometric modelling and virtual representation of architectural complexes of a monumental nature as an analytic tool to aid in a comprenhensive interdisciplinary approach to the study of such complexes. DIAPReM is especially engaged in sectors relating to the preservation and restoration of archaelogical sites and architectural works. Its specialities include 3D surveys, solid prototyping of architectural features and antiquites, multi-spectral analysis, the study of historical material and of the technical and structural problems associated with artefacts of historical interest, and field work and analyses for architectural and archaelogical heritage site restoration and preservation projects in relation to the environment and the territory.
The research in which DIAPReM has been involvede in Italy and abroad have helped in developing preventive preservation strategies employing innovative methods and technologies for heritage site monitoring and control for urban and environmental upgrading.
The Centre is especially interested in 3D data acquisition at different scales and degrees of accuracy. To do this it uses a variety of instruments and techniques so as to develop experimental procedures and methods for best surveying. 3D laser scanner surveying permits accurate dimensional checks for developing 3D models of actual architectural features and for carrying out structural and environmental checks and analyses.
DIAPReM is part of the team " Architettura Energia", Department of Architecture of University of Ferrara, is member of Focus Area Cultural Heritage, Horizontal Issue "Archaeology", European Construction Technology Platform, and is part of TekneHub, laboratory of Technopole of Ferrara, Constructions thematic platform of the Emilia-Romagna high technology network.
